在2014年2月25日举行的上海市人大常委会第十一次会议上，上海市城乡建设和管理委员会主任和上海市交通委员会主任被分别任命，这也意味着上海市城乡建设和交通委员会正式“分家”，而被拆分的两个机构预计在本月底挂牌。

上世纪90年代，在城市建设高峰时期，为方便管理，上海将交通运营管理的职能划进建委，建委随即改名为“上海市建设和交通委员会”。2008年，在大部制改革中，成立“上海市建设和交通委员会”。

拆分后的“建管委”和“交通委”将对接国务院住建部和交通运输部两部。

据透露，新的交通委将全盘统筹、规划、运营、管理上海交通，而上海市路政局及交警总队的路设部门划入交通委。
