Dr. Sunny Ramchandani currently serves as the Deputy Chief Medical Officer at Aetna, where he helps ensure that clinical innovation & integration strategically occur throughout Aetna’s enterprise.  Dr. Ramchandani is responsible for the design and implementation of AetnaCare, an enterprise-wide strategy that combines consumer-insights with forward-thinking population segmentation approaches.  He also helps lead the enterprise development of new value-based arrangements with pharmaceutical companies, device manufacturers, and retail clinics.  Dr. Ramchandani previously served as the Medical Director of Healthcare Business and Chief Population Health Officer at Naval Medical Center San Diego.  In this role, he helped lead the region’s population health programs, whereby healthcare delivery was integrated with social, wellness, and health services for over 400,000 beneficiaries in the San Diego market.  Under Dr Ramchandani’s leadership, the US Navy’s population health program lowered inpatient admissions by 34% and emergency room visits by 20% among targeted populations. Prior to this assignment, Dr. Ramchandani was the first Navy physician to be selected as a White House Fellow and served as the Chief Medical Officer of the Federal Employee Health Benefit Program (FEHBP).  The FEHBP serves 8 million beneficiaries, contains over 200 healthcare plans, and has an annual budget of $43 billion.  In this role, he guided the development, implementation, and evaluation of FEHBP’S medical management, quality management, and clinical improvement programs.  In 2009, Dr Ramchandani deployed to Afghanistan as the Senior Medical Mentor for the Afghan National Security Forces and led the development of Afghanistan’s first national hospital standards.  Dr Ramchandani previously served as the Integrated Chief of General Internal Medicine at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he co-founded the US Navy’s Patient-Centered Medical Home model in 2007.  This model has been subsequently adopted by the entire Military Health System (> 400 hospitals and clinics). Dr Ramchandani earned his MPH (Healthcare Management) from the Harvard School of Public Health and his MD from the Yale School of Medicine, where he received the Norman Herzig Award for his dedication to humanitarian service in India.  He earned his BS from the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was a Truman Scholar and graduated first in his class academically.
